About the Area:

High Point began as a site on the Old Indian Trail, which became Old Plank Road, extending from the coast to the mountains. The name of the city derives from a statement made in the 19th century by the chief engineer of surveyors for the North Carolina Railroad who noted it was the highest point in the topographical survey “so we will mark it High Point.”

Surrounded by more than 125 furniture manufacturers, High Point was established as the Furniture Capital of the World in the 1920s. It was also a center for hosiery manufacturing and other industries. Although much of the furniture and textile manufacturing has gone overseas, High Point remains the center for more than 80,000 furniture buyers who come to High Point every April and October to view the latest in furniture design and accessories.

The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, now in its 32nd year, enhances the cultural life of the community. In early fall and the month of December, it presents professional theatre productions in the 1000-seat High Point Theatre. The High Point Museum and Historical Park, the 1788 Haley House, the Furniture Library, Mendenhall Plantation and Castle McCulloch are among other popular sites.

In addition to these cultural activities and recreational opportunities at Oak Hollow Lake, High Point is home to High Point University, formerly High Point College, probably the fastest growing university in the country.

Today High Point has grown to be part of a thriving metropolitan area called the Triad, encompassing Greensboro and Winston-Salem, with more than a million in population.
