Otey Construction

The fun starts with the kitchen in Otey homes
The kitchen is almost always the center of activity in any home. When you’re building a custom home, it can be the most fun. There are so many options and so many ways to get your ideal food-preparation-entertain-guests-eat-a-midnight-snack space.
Custom home builder Kevin Otey, owner of Otey Construction, sees a lot of enthusiasm from customers when the time comes to select layouts, features, appliances and fixtures for their favorite room.

“We work with the homeowner to agree on a budget,” says Otey. “Once that’s set, we say, go have fun and they select their floors, appliances, cabinets and fixtures.”
From cabinets, to sinks, to flooring, to lighting, the customer gets to express herself in the final design of the kitchen.
It’s not without guidance. Otey puts the homeowner in touch with expert kitchen designers to assure that the homeowner gets everything he wants within a highly functional design.
“If the kitchen flows well, you’re going to have a kitchen that functions,” says Leigh Southard of Carolna Kitchens & Baths.
Robin Gainey, of Gate City Kitchens, another Otey designer agrees that flow is a starting point, “I think flow and being able to have a kitchen that is spacious with multiple workstations is vital, to accommodate a second sink or prep sink for times when more than one person cooking. Islands and bars for buffets are necessary for entertaining.”
“Before the contract, I sometimes meet with them with their floor plan ideas,” says Southard. “My advice: think about accessories and appliances you want and have that in your head because that affects the layout…for example, a double oven. Decorative hoods take a lot of pre-planning that affects a lot of people in the construction process. Have a general idea of what you want.”
With today’s open floor plans, the kitchen is often an extension of the living room, or den, or dining room. Little wonder the kitchen is so important to home resale value. It’s been a long time trend that people are simply staying home more, which is part of why kitchens get so much attention, care and pride.
“If we can make the home building process more fun for the home buyer, we’ve done a good job,” says Otey. “And the kitchen is where this happens the most.”
Building a Custom Home is a Better Deal

It all starts with the frame. And that’s where Kevin Otey started. Kevin Otey began his career in home construction in 1981 as a framer, swinging a hammer at jobsites all over Guilford County. That’s hard physical labor, but it also gave the young builder a vision for how to grow a business based on giving homowners exactly what they wanted.
Along the way, Otey learned that a big part of customer satisfaction is in the way you work. The schedule you maintain. The budget you manage. How your jobsite looks. And the promises you keep.
Through real-world, on-the-job training and a decade of calluses, Otey earned a reputation as a tradesman who looked out for the homeowner’s best interests and focused on making custom homes that are truly the product of customer satisfaction.
Otey Construction, today, is one of the Triad’s most respected firms in the field. The company regularly wins awards for its designs in some of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Guilford County. But the real test for Kevin Otey has always been what his customers say about his work.
Otey homes, both spec and custom, are as solid as they are distinctively livable and practical. A tour of an Otey home in any price point reveals a lot of details and features other builders avoid…plenty of trim, lots of windows, high ceilings, expertly planned kitchens and bathrooms with the comforts of an upscale hotel.

It’s all the result of listening to what homeowners want. When you talk to Otey homeowners, you consistently hear about how responsive Otey Construction is to their requirements and even revisions.
In today’s economy, homeowners are more cautious and cost-conscious than ever. But a home buyer with an eye for value can get exactly what she wants in a custom home, from vaulted ceilings to gourmet kitchens to inspired floor plans, all the way down to lumber frame. This is the homeowner that seeks out Otey Construction.
